The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), often called the Wage and Hour Act, dates from 1938 and has been amended many times since. Its main provisions cover minimum wage, overtime pay, child labor and equal pay.

This 90-minute FLSA wage and hour compliance webinar explains how to decide whether employees are correctly classified as exempt or non-exempt. You'll work through the duties, salary level and salary basis tests, the six exemptions, when overtime is owed and how to calculate it.

Federal wage and hour law is enforced by the US Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division, and state labor departments enforce state law. Getting it wrong can mean back wages, damages, penalties, attorney fees, court costs and possible civil or criminal penalties.

  • Explain the main provisions of the FLSA
  • Apply the duties, salary level and salary basis tests to classify employees
  • Identify the six FLSA exemptions and a job's primary duty
  • Decide when overtime is due and calculate it correctly
  • Meet minimum wage, equal pay, child labor and recordkeeping requirements
  • Describe the penalties for wage and hour non-compliance

  • What the Fair Labor Standards Act is
  • Recent changes and rescissions to salary levels (overtime thresholds)
  • Federal and state minimum wage proposals
  • Tests used to decide whether an employee is exempt from the FLSA
  • Why the primary duty of a job matters
  • The six FLSA exemptions

  • FLSA minimum wage provisions
  • FLSA equal pay provisions
  • Child labor regulations
  • Recordkeeping requirements
  • Consequences of FLSA non-compliance

Misclassifying employees or miscalculating overtime is one of the most common and costly wage and hour mistakes. This webinar lays the groundwork for checking that every employee is properly classified and that wage and hour rules are followed, and it reviews recent changes to the overtime salary thresholds and minimum wage proposals.

It is designed for HR, compensation and compliance professionals, managers, supervisors and employees.
